Autavia 45 Ref. 3646M, Valjoux 92, c1964

This elegant and rare Autavia is from c1964, featuring a classic Valjoux 92 manual wind movement. This version is an early ‘1st case execution, 2nd dial execution’, signified by the beautiful dauphine hands. Later versions sported straight hands. This model was available with hour bezel markings, or minute markings as in this example.

These early Autavias are especially significant, as they were the models that began Heuers foray into the world of motorsport, with several of the ‘cooler’ drivers wearing them. This relationship was key to the whole ethos and design direction of Heuer, and as we know Heuer / TAG Heuer wouldn’t be what it is today without this relationship. I’m only aware of one other example identical to this one, belonging to a fellow collector in the Netherlands (Hi Ron!).

I wasn’t happy with the white re-lume on the hands, so I had them re-lumed in a more fitting vintage colour. The effect is amazing, it really makes the dial ‘pop’, the job is perfect, with a beautiful matt chalky texture – thanks James!

Shown with hour markings in the 1964 (est) catalogue
